1. Prominent Disclosures: Sensitive Device Permissions

To provide proactive family safety, real-time danger avoidance routing, and anti-stalker detection, FYSA requires specific hardware and operating system permissions. In accordance with Google Play Developer Policies and Apple App Store Review Guidelines, we disclose the explicit reasons and runtime behaviors for these permissions:

A. Background Location Access (ACCESS_BACKGROUND_LOCATION, ACCESS_FINE_LOCATION, ACCESS_COARSE_LOCATION)

Prominent Google Play Policy Disclosure:

FYSA collects location data to enable real-time family location sharing, safe routing alerts around high-crime zones, proximity hazard warnings, and emergency SOS tracking even when the app is closed or not in use.

Specifically, background location is required to:

  • Calculate Safe Turn-by-Turn Routes: Dynamically steer you away from active crime clusters, violent incident hotspots, and hazardous road conditions along your travel path.
  • Family Circle Real-Time Awareness: Allow authorized family members and guardians to view your live progress and receive automated geofence arrival/departure alerts (e.g., "Arrived at School" or "Left Work").
  • Dead-Man's Presence Sweeper: Detect if your device goes unexpectedly offline or is disabled in an unfamiliar high-risk area, alerting your designated emergency guardians.
  • Emergency SOS Broadcast: Transmit your precise real-time coordinates to your trusted contacts during an SOS distress event.

You may modify or revoke location access at any time through your device settings; however, doing so will disable live safe-routing, family location sharing, and automated emergency safety checks.

B. Bluetooth Scanning & Nearby Devices (BLUETOOTH_SCAN, BLUETOOTH_CONNECT, NEARBY_WIFI_DEVICES)

FYSA uses Bluetooth scanning solely for our Anti-Stalker Protection feature. The app scans for nearby Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) peripheral beacons (such as Apple AirTags, Samsung SmartTags, Tile trackers, and unknown BLE beacons) to determine if an unauthorized tracker is continuously traveling with you over time and distance. We do not use Bluetooth for advertising, audio streaming, or commercial user profiling.

C. Push Notifications (POST_NOTIFICATIONS)

Push notifications via Google Firebase Cloud Messaging (FCM) and Apple Push Notification service (APNs) are used exclusively to deliver critical time-sensitive safety updates, including SOS panic alerts, severe weather warnings, crime danger-zone proximity alerts, family check-in notifications, and device offline alerts.

D. Camera & Photos / Media Storage (CAMERA, READ_MEDIA_IMAGES)

Used only when you voluntarily take or select an image for your profile avatar, attach photo evidence to an in-app safety incident feedback report, or send a media attachment within your private family chat.

E. Emergency SOS, Motion & Activity, and Heart Rate (ACTIVITY_RECOGNITION, Motion & Fitness, Health Services / HealthKit)

Emergency SOS. When you press and hold SOS (in the app, on a widget or tile, with Siri or a shortcut, or on your watch), FYSA immediately alerts the SOS contacts you chose, with your live location. FYSA does not contact 911 or any emergency service for you; the SOS screen offers a button to call 911 yourself.

Location during an SOS. While an SOS is open, each of your SOS contacts can see your live location, including contacts you do not normally share your location with. That access ends when you end the SOS, and it expires automatically after 24 hours if the SOS is never ended. Your phone also reports your location more often than usual for up to 30 minutes after an SOS starts.

Potential emergency detection (where enabled). Some accounts can turn on automatic detection. It uses your phone’s motion and activity sensors (for example, to notice a sudden sprint while you are on foot in a higher-risk area) and first asks you “Are you OK?”. Your SOS contacts are alerted only if you don’t answer or you press SOS. Motion sensors run only while you are on foot in a moderate- or high-risk area, except for users in a limited testing program.

Car crash detection (where enabled). While you drive at 25 mph or more, FYSA reads your phone’s accelerometer and gyroscope to notice a crash-sized impact followed by the car stopping. It then vibrates your phone for 60 seconds and asks “Are you OK?”; FYSA never calls 911 for you. Your SOS contacts are alerted only if you don’t answer or you choose Get help; they receive where it happened (road, direction of travel, nearby address and coordinates) so they can tell 911. To rule out rides and other non-road impacts, the location just before the impact is checked against a road map on our servers. On iPhone, if you allow it, FYSA can also receive your iPhone’s own Crash Detection events (the time, the location, and whether your iPhone tried to call emergency services). Crash detection does not run while you are parked or driving slowly, and FYSA cannot detect every crash.

Heart rate (watch Safe Walk only). If you start a Safe Walk on a paired Apple Watch or Wear OS watch, your heart rate is read during that walk to look for a sudden spike while you are barely moving. Your heart rate is never read at home, and a Safe Walk ends when you get there. Raw heart-rate readings never leave your devices and are never stored on our servers. The only heart-rate information we receive is whether the spike check triggered and how many beats per minute your heart rate rose above its recent average.

F. Microphone for FYSA Live (RECORD_AUDIO, Microphone)

Only while FYSA Live is open. FYSA Live is an optional voice assistant. The microphone is used only while you have FYSA Live open on screen, and it stops when you close it, go quiet, or leave the app. FYSA listens on your device for when you are speaking and sends only those moments, not the silence between them.

Where your voice goes. Your voice is streamed directly from your phone to Google’s Gemini Live API, which understands it and speaks the reply. Your audio does not pass through or get stored on FYSA’s servers. When a session starts, FYSA’s servers send Google the instructions for it: your first name, the names of the people and groups in your circle, your local date, time and time zone, and which kind of screen you opened FYSA Live from. During the session Gemini also receives the results of what you ask FYSA to look up (for example, which place a family member is at, their battery level, or your upcoming events).

What FYSA Live can and cannot do. It can look things up, move around the app, and prepare messages, location shares and events, which are sent only after you confirm. It can open the SOS screen, but it can never send an SOS: only your press and hold does.

2. Information We Collect

We collect information in three ways: information you provide directly, information collected automatically during app operation, and information received from authorized third parties.

A. Information You Provide Directly

  • Account Details: Full name, email address, password hash (encrypted via bcrypt), phone number (if provided for SMS verification), and profile avatar.
  • Family Circle Data: Contact lists and group identifiers created when you establish a family circle or invite trusted members.
  • Safety Feedback & Reports: User-submitted hazard reports, road condition notes, or customer support communications.
  • Calendar Information: Optional scheduled events and trip itineraries synced to plan safe departure times.

B. Information Collected Automatically

  • Precise Geolocation & Telemetry: GPS coordinates, altitude, travel bearing, speed, and timestamps recorded during active trips and background monitoring.
  • Bluetooth Peripheral Data: Cryptographic advertising payloads, RSSI signal strength, and anonymized peripheral identifiers of nearby BLE tracking beacons detected during anti-stalking scans.
  • Device & Technical Information: Device hardware model, operating system version, unique device identifiers, IP address, network carrier, and crash/diagnostic logs.
  • App Usage & Crash Reports: Which screens you open and features you use, app sessions, and crash reports with the in-app steps leading up to a crash, collected through Google Firebase Analytics and Firebase Crashlytics and tied to your FYSA account ID. Firebase Analytics also estimates an approximate, city-level location from your IP address.
  • Emergency Incident Records: When you send an SOS: when it started and ended, how it was sent, who it was sent to, who responded, and the last location your phone reported during it.
  • Emergency Recordings (“black box”): A short recording of sensor readings from about 3 minutes before to 2 minutes after an SOS, a detection, or a check-in answer. It includes speed, GPS accuracy, activity changes (walking, running, still, in a vehicle), motion-sensor readings where detection is enabled, battery level, local time, and whether you were at home or work. It does not include GPS coordinates or raw heart rate. For a possible car crash, the recording instead covers raw motion-sensor readings from about 10 seconds before to 30 seconds after the impact, and speed and GPS accuracy from about 1 minute before to 2 minutes after, again without coordinates.
  • Safety Detection Diagnostics: Periodic health reports about the emergency features, such as permission states, whether your watch is reachable, and how often check-ins were shown and answered. They contain no coordinates.

3. How We Use Your Information

We process your personal information strictly to operate, maintain, and enhance the safety services of FYSA:

  • Dynamic Risk-Avoidance Routing: Comparing your trajectory against our real-time database of municipal crime records, police dispatch reports, and severe weather warnings via our routing engine.
  • Anti-Stalking Heuristics: Running correlation algorithms on BLE beacon sightings across multiple locations to identify and alert you to suspicious tracking devices.
  • Family Circle Visibility & Peer Permissions: Delivering encrypted location updates exclusively to contacts you explicitly authorize through our peer-to-peer permission model.
  • Emergency SOS Dispatch: Relaying high-priority SOS alerts, your live location, and “I’m on it” and all-clear updates to the SOS contacts you chose.
  • Improving Emergency Detection: Reviewing emergency recordings and diagnostics to measure how often detection catches real emergencies and how often it raises false alarms, and to tune it.
  • Device Presence & Offline Monitoring: Running periodic heartbeat checks to detect disconnected or powered-down devices in high-risk zones.
  • Service Improvement & Security: Monitoring platform performance, preventing fraud, verifying subscriptions, and debugging technical issues.
  • Product Analytics & Crash Reporting: Understanding which features are used so we can improve them, and finding and fixing crashes. This data is never used for advertising and never combined with other companies’ data to track you across apps or websites.

4. Data Sharing & Third-Party Processors

We share data only with verified service providers who assist in operating our secure infrastructure under strict confidentiality and data-processing agreements:

Provider / Category Purpose Data Processed
Amazon Web Services (AWS) Secure cloud hosting, encrypted databases (PostgreSQL/RDS), and encrypted media storage (S3). Account credentials, telemetry, uploaded media.
Google Firebase (FCM) High-reliability push notifications and emergency alert dispatch. Device push tokens, encrypted notification payloads.
Google Firebase Analytics Understanding how the app is used so we can improve it. Screens viewed, features used, app sessions, an app-instance identifier, approximate location derived from IP address, and your FYSA account ID.
Google Firebase Crashlytics Crash reporting so we can find and fix bugs. Crash logs, device model and OS version, the in-app steps leading up to a crash, and your FYSA account ID.
Google Maps Platform Maps, place search, and turn-by-turn navigation. Your location while you use the map or navigate, map interactions, and a device identifier.
Google Gemini API AI features such as trip planning and threat analysis. The text of your AI request. We cache responses but do not store your request.
AirLabs Flight Watch: flight schedules, gates, and baggage belts. The flight number and date of a followed flight. Never your name or who is flying.
adsb.lol Flight Watch: where a followed aircraft is, from its public ADS-B broadcast. The aircraft's callsign or transponder code. Never your name or who is flying.
Google Gemini Live API FYSA Live, the in-app voice assistant, while you have it open. Your voice while you speak to FYSA Live, sent directly from your device. From our servers when a session starts: your first name, the names of the people and groups in your circle, your local date, time and time zone. During it: the results of what you ask FYSA Live to look up. We do not store your audio or a transcript.
Valhalla / OpenStreetMap Open-source route calculation, turns, and isochrone generation. Start and destination coordinates (anonymized session routing).
Google Play & Apple App Store In-app purchase verification and subscription management. Anonymous transaction IDs, subscription receipts (no raw credit card data).

Your SOS Contacts: You choose your SOS contacts from people you share a group with. Each contact is told when you add them and can decline. During an SOS they receive your name, your live location, and updates about the SOS; if you added a phone number, they also see it so they can call you. They never receive your emergency recordings or diagnostics.

Flight Watch: When you or a group member follows a flight, its flight number, date, airports, times, gates, and who is on it are visible to the groups chosen when it was added (for a Trip Planner flight, the people on the trip). The flight's positions are kept for 24 hours after it lands. If you choose "I'm picking up", the place you start from is used once to time the drive with Google Maps Platform and is stored with that flight, so FYSA can tell you when to leave, until the flight is removed.

Legal Disclosures: We may disclose information if required to do so by applicable law, regulation, valid court order, or subpoena, or to protect the vital safety of our users and the public in imminent life-threatening emergencies.

5. Our Zero-Sale Data Commitment

FYSA NEVER sells, rents, trades, or monetizes your Personal Identifiable Information (PII), real-time location data, family contact lists, or private communications to data brokers, ad networks, or commercial marketing companies.

Any statistical or mobility research we conduct (such as macro-level traffic trends or municipal safety indices) is strictly aggregated, de-identified, and stripped of all personal and device identifiers.

6. Children's Privacy & Family Circles

FYSA is designed to help parents and legal guardians protect their families. For users under the age of 13 (or under the applicable age of digital consent in your jurisdiction), accounts must be created with explicit parental consent or added directly by a parent or legal guardian within a family circle.

Parents and legal guardians maintain granular control over their children's accounts, including the ability to review, modify, or delete their child's location history and permissions at any time.

7. Data Retention & Security Standards

We implement rigorous defense-in-depth technical and organizational security measures:

  • Encryption in Transit: All communication between the mobile client and our API servers is encrypted using modern TLS 1.3 encryption.
  • Encryption at Rest: Database volumes, S3 buckets, and sensitive user fields are encrypted at rest using AES-256 standards.
  • Authentication & Token Rotation: Stateless 15-minute JWT access tokens with revocable 30-day cryptographically hashed refresh tokens.
  • Location History Lifecycle: High-frequency granular telemetry coordinates are automatically pruned after their analytical retention window.
  • Diagnostics: Location, Bluetooth, driving and safety-detection diagnostic reports are automatically deleted after 30 days.
  • Emergency Recordings: Recordings of an SOS, of a detection that alerted your SOS contacts, or that you mark as a real emergency are kept for 180 days and then automatically deleted. Real emergencies are rare, and these recordings are how we verify and improve detection. Other emergency recordings follow the 30-day diagnostics window. You can ask us to delete your recordings sooner at any time.
  • FYSA Live Sessions: We do not store your voice or a transcript of what you or FYSA Live said. For each session we keep when it happened, how long it lasted, how much of the AI service it used and how many actions it took, to bill commands, prevent abuse and control costs; these records are kept while your account exists and are deleted with it. The instructions a session starts with (your first name and the names in your circle) are kept only while the session can continue and are deleted shortly after it ends.
  • Emergency Incident Records: The record of each SOS (times, recipients, responses, and last reported location) is kept while your account exists so you and your contacts can refer back to it, and is deleted with your account.
